Description
Eucalyptus Oil is a colorless liquid, extracted by steam-distilling the leaves of the Eucalyptus Globulus (Blue Gum) tree. It contains 70-85% 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol) and its use as a mouthwash (after dilution with water) may promote periodontal health. Eucalyptus also has antibacterial activity against cariogenic (causing tooth decay) and periodontopathic bacteria. Eucalyptus oil has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Diluted eucalyptus oil when applied directly to the skin helps relieve symptoms of the common cold, upper respiratory tract infections and is used as a decongestant when inhaled. It reduces pain and swelling of respiratory tract mucous membranes, joint pain, genital herpes, and nasal stuffiness. Eucalyptus oil is also used in traditional Aboriginal, Chinese and Indian medicine for treating fungal infections, skin wound, loosen coughs, whooping cough, asthma, pulmonary tuberculosis, osteoarthritis, joint pain (rheumatism), acne, wounds, poorly healing ulcers and burns. It is also an effective insect repellent and miticide.
